The Red - Red Velvet MV & Album Review

I nearly forgot I had a blog, my apologies, it’s been ages^^ Like 7 months or so… eep! I can’t promise that I’ll start posting more often…  I guess I shall appear & post when I have something to talk about. Kinda like now XD

Red Velvet came back with their first full length album ‘The Red’, and I’ve actually been looking forward to this because RV are definitely one of the more unique and distinct groups out there right now.

I’ll start off with my title track/MV review, then break down a little bit of what I thought of each track. Hope you enjoy~

01. Dumb Dumb: As for the track itself, my only slight dislike if I had to be super nitpicky is all the MJ references in the rap breakdown towards the end of the song; it kind of didn’t flow with the rest of the track for me. Other than that, and that is a slight critique, I am very impressed with the track. It was everything I was expecting and more : addicting, unique and refreshing. Yay for Yeri getting more lines showcased; her voice is so soft and I’m glad we get a better grasp of her vocals here. Wendy was killing it with her adlibs and vocals.

As for the Music Video, Seulgi was killing me with the choreo - part of the reason why I can’t wait to see the song live - I believe she is the main dancer and this clearly shows why. The chorus is literal perfection. Not sure if there was storyline to the video, because if there was I clearly missed it, lol. But regardless, the video is the right balance of quirky and fun without being too weird. The nearly-completely-ripped jean outfits are something I can see becoming a trend. The girls killed it, and looked amazing, I also liked their mini shorts with the one stocking outfits with their representative colors.  Overall, they looked and sounded amazing and I can already tell they are gonna take over the music charts~

02. Huff n Puff: Also known as the track from the first teaser XD Very strong vocals and a strong beat to match. Sometimes I get kinda lost in the transition of the beat(s) but the song overall still manages to work. Wendy’s adlibs/vocals are fire. I kinda hope they promote this song live as a mini stage before ‘Dumb Dumb’.

03. Campfire: If I had to describe this song in one word it has to be: ‘smooth’. Beautiful vocals & Irene’s rap(s) are pretty strong; this song also has a beat that is much easier to follow. Overall a solid track, nothing specific to nitpick on my part. There is also something oldies about it.

04. Red Dress: AKA Teaser 5 track :p This song, in my opinion, is strong enough to have been a title track on it’s own for some parts, but because its overall tone is a little bit slower and not as upbeat as some of their tracks I can see why it wasn’t picked. I get a very f(x) vibe/feel from this track. This song also changes beats a bit, but it is easier to follow than ‘huff n puff’ for me.

05. Oh Boy: There is something RnB-ish about this track. It has a beautiful piano + background beat combo. The little harmonies they have throughout the song are nice to hear.

06. Lady’s Room: Very upbeat, and definitely cutesy tempo to this song. Kinda like the lyrics, you get the vibe you want to hang with your friends and have a good time. This is another track that reminds me of f(x), not that that’s a bad thing. I think RV are demonstrating how versatile they are as a group on this album.

07. Time Slip: The repetitive beat at the beginning and reappearing throughout the song reminds me off Iggy’s Fancy. This is the song that was used in their third track teaser for the MV. When that base disappears, and they showcase their vocals to a slightly different beat, the track gets unique and highlights the girls’ voices nicely.

08. Don’t U Wait No More: This is the song I was looking most forward to after hearing it in their second teaser for the MV. Had they not chosen ‘Dumb Dumb’ as their title track I would have been quite fine with this song being the title. It’s very strong AND unique. The harmonies, overall upbeat-ness, and vocals of the track are no joke. I would actually love to see them sing this live as well to see how they would choreograph this. The only downside is that it’s quite short, not even three minutes long.

09. Day 1: The trumpet or brass they play in this song gives - along with the other instruments - me a very retro feel and also an anime/OST feel. Their vocals are so light and smooth with lots of harmonies. Something about the beat, probably the way the piano is played, definitely gives it a TV show end theme or intro feel XD.

10. Cool World: Something about this track gives me an EXO vibe^^ It is a smooth track that is a strong topper on the album as a whole. If it was released in English I could see this being a track that plays on a US radio station.

I was surprised at the diversity of all their tracks. All the members manage to show their individual strengths and for a group that is still considered ‘rookies’ this is an extraordinarily strong album. Red Velvet is one of the groups that I’ve stanned since the beginning and their growth in the short time they’ve been around is amazing. The girls’ vocal ability really is outstanding in this album.

side note: It'd be cool if they had a repackage of this album later on called 'The Velvet' :3

Hope you enjoyed as much as I did, let me know what you thought down below~

Girls' Generation Comeback! 지금은 소녀시대 ❤

QUICK NOTE: I try to even out my posts, and not bombard you with a whole bunch of posts on one day and none the next, but with all the stuff going on - and how busy I've been lately (as much as I hate to do it) that's what I'm going too have to do ~ for the time being only though :3

ALRIGHT, Back to the topic of the post : Girls' Generation !

I haven't posted anything on Korea yet, because quite frankly I haven't had time, but just FYI, I'm very much in love with the Korean culture - movies, shows, songs, dress, food etc...

So with the comeback of my favorite Kpop Girl Group, Girls' Generation, I feel like now is as ideal a time as ever to make a post ~ :)

In case you are unaware, there is a famous Girl Group from Korea called Girls' Generation, and after about 14 months out of the Korean K-pop scene, they have finally made their Korean comeback with their 4th EP called Mr. Mr. which is also the name of the single they just released their music video for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8j_XEn9b_8

The Video: I know there is a lot of mixed feelings on the video, but I enjoyed it overall; maybe it's just because I'm so happy to see the girls back after over a year of leave from the Korean music department. I personally enjoy the techno style and I like the concept. It kind of reminds me of the "Like A Boy" theme by Ciara back in 2007, with all the girls dressing like guys, except SNSD looks much classier.
The I heard there were apparently some issues with the video development / editing and some files got corrupted or something - so the girls had to reshoot some scenes. All I can say to that is I think they still did a pretty good job, I wouldn't have said anything was out of the ordinary if I just watched the video without that knowledge. That being said, the only thing that could've been re-shot in my opinion is the first dance break:

Just because where they are, and what they are wearing has nothing to do with the concept... It stil looks nice and isn't too odd, but if I had to guess, that would be the only thing to grab my attention...

Other then that, the girls all look stunning as usual, and the cinematography of the video is beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the scene where they were all strutting through the hall towards the middle of the song.

I also love the buildup at the end of the song, first with Tiffany's high note, then Jessica adding on, and then my bias Taeyeon spicing it up even more.

The Album: Maybe it's because I'm biased, or because its a short EP as opposed to a full length album, but I'm in love with all of the songs. There are only 6 and they are:

No.Title

Length
   1."Mr.Mr."

03:55
2."Goodbye"  03:14
3."Europa" (Korean유로파)03:22
4."Wait A Minute"  03:25
5."Back Hug" (Korean백허그)04:09
6."Soul(Korean version)

03:47

My favorite song is "Soul"; apparently GG already released a Chinese version of the song, but I haven't heard it before so I'm in love! The beat is infectious, and their voices are on point. The chorus is so nice, and Tiffany and Hyoyeon's rapping is so good. Next comes the single "Mr. Mr." just because it is their single, and I can't wait for them to perform it live on all the music shows ~

The rest of their songs are nice as well: some cute upbeat songs (Wait A Minute & Goodbye), some songs that remind me of old Soshi (like Europa) and some ballads (Back Hug) that show off their voices. That's why I love SNSD, at the end of the day, aside from being pretty, they actually have wonderful singing voices and raw talent, and sometimes people forget that.

Critiques & Final Commentary: For the video I wish I could see more of the dancing, since GG do have a signature dance from each of their Korean singles. But I guess we have to wait for the live performances to see!

On the album, I like how you can hear more of each girls' voice in each song, like in "Goodbye" you can hear Hyoyeon's distinct voice and I wish the parts were divvied up more evenly so we can hear her and some of the other girls like Yuri and Sooyoung in the main single. I understand the other girls are more of the main vocalists, but still, I feel like as time goes on they get less parts - in the title songs at least. You can hear them on the albums though.

They also all looked absolutely stunning :)
All in all: great album, wonderful comeback. Soshi for life! 지금은 소녀시대
Go buy the album :D
Take care!
